Small Group Ministry for High School Guys

When I read a label that says "One size fits all" I tend to get a little skeptical. What it usually means is that it doesn't fit anybody exactly right. And even if it did, where did they get the idea that everybody would want to wear the exact same style? We understand that when it comes to clothes, but somewhere along the line we got messed up when it comes to small groups for students.

Small groups are a great idea, but not a new one. I think Jesus' group of disciples may have been the original model. Small groups today typically follow a very different pattern than what Jesus did. Now each member of the group gets a book. The idea is for each person to read the designated chapter on their own then come back the next week to discuss it. Whether the small group is intended for senior citizens or seniors in high school, the same model is used. The "one size fits all" approach comes into play.

But that doesn't generally work for high school guys. They may read the book for two or three weeks, but that's about it. After that, the small group leader spends the first part of the small group time reviewing what each of them should have read, then tries to getting a meaningful discussion going. Right. The model is broke. And why should we be surprised? What other area of our youth ministry is patterned off a method used for adult and senior ministries? We wouldn't consider it with our music or activities, but somehow we got duped into thinking it will work for small group studies.

Take a fresh look at how Jesus did small groups for guys. I've never read where he handed each of the disciples a scroll, assigned them a chapter to read, and asked them to come back a week later so they could discuss it. Instead, he took them on little outings and demonstrated object lessons for them. Think about it. The storm at sea, walking on water, the fig tree, and every time he healed someone or cast out a demon. These were all activities and object lessons Jesus used to teach his small group. The disciples never knew what was coming next.

My wife and I have been applying this principle to our high school small group. We don't hand any of them a book. Instead we give them a little teaser of what we'll be doing and encourage them to come out. Then we go on an outing or do an object lesson that leads right into a spiritual truth and discussion.

Blowing up eggs in a microwave, navigating mine fields with rat traps, prompting pumpkins to puke, and all sorts of other object lessons become tools that keep the guys guessing and coming back for more.

The film Dirty Dancing came out in 1987, and its story takes place even earlier, but this deceptively titled little masterpiece took the moviegoers of the world by surprise. With a cast of characters played by relatively unknown actors, and not much of a budget, it has proven to be a continuing delight. The fact that it has grossed over $300 million and set a record of more than a million sales of home videos might tell you something. The fact that it engendered two multi-platinum albums and untold singles tells you even more.

The dancing in this movie is certainly "dirty" by most popular standards of 1963, when it takes place. Foxtrot it is not. Mambo to the max is more like it. If you were old enough to see the movie when it first appeared, watching it now is a "trip", and a really good one! The main characters are Frances Houseman, known to family and friends as "Baby", and Johnny Castle, a hunk of a dance instructor. Jennifer Grey is the perfect actress for the role of "Baby", and Patrick Swayze emerges into stardom with his portrayal of Johnny Castle.

The dancing and all its side effects take place at a resort in the Catskills, where the Houseman family is taking a summer vacation. Baby's father is Dr. Houseman, physician to the rather sycophantic owner of Kellerman's Resort. His wife and Baby's older sister, Lisa, are relatively minor characters but each contributes to the subplot of the film. Baby's fascination with the dance instructor, Johnny Castle, and his partner Penny gets her and her family involved with "those people", and the fun begins.

Watching Johnny and his partner, Penny, do their riveting (and deliciously dirty) Mambo number at a staff party, Baby is entranced. But when Penny falls prey to the owner's son, and has an illegal and life-threatening abortion, Baby gets her father involved, and it appears to be curtains for her growing attraction to the irresistible Johnny.

But Baby also has the moves, as she and Johnny find out together when she offers to fill in for his partner so he won't lose his job. Both of them have doubts, but Johnny is a peerless teacher, and Baby quickly learns to trust him - and falls in love, of course.

While all this is happening, Baby's older sister is getting ready to "go all the way" with Robbie, son of the resort owner, though we have learned that Robbie is the guilty cause of the dancer's abortion, but feels no guilt. When another woman who has carnal designs on Johnny spies him embracing Baby, spite leads her to accuse Johnny of the theft of a patron's wallet. Johnny is assumed to be the culprit until Baby tells her father and the irate resort owner that Johnny couldn't have done it because he was in his room all night - with her!

The "dirty dancing" that these two wonderfully believable young people supply is so entrancing because it is both sensual and sophisticated, yet still has a purity that defies any element of sleaze. It is just a joy to watch them together. The grand finale has the entire clientele of Kellerman's on their feet and getting into the spirit in a big way. It's a triumph of courage over self-doubt, and love over any darn thing that stands in its way!

Dirty Dancing is basically a simple, romantic love story, with just enough supporting characters and interwoven plot lines to keep it interesting. When the forces of stodginess and intolerance show up, they are ultimately and emphatically overwhelmed by the forces of love and fair play. The realistically choreographed dance scenes are a powerful force in themselves, but everything comes together for a rousing happy ending.

This simple boy-meets-girl and goodness-wins-out Hollywood production has proved to be much more than it ever aspired to be. The Broadway musical adaptation of Dirty Dancing has done well in Europe, Australia and Canada, and is still showing in London. You can also catch the touring production in Boston until March 15th. Apply saddle soap all over the shoes, both inside and out and wipe the excess again. Dry the insides carefully. Place a sheet of tissue paper or a paper napkin inside the shoe and leave it for a few minutes. Repeat the process to dry out the shoe entirely. After this, dust some talcum powder to suck up any remaining moisture. Remember that leather is skin, literally and figuratively, so treat your shoes as carefully as you would your own skin. If possible, clean the dirt off after every wear with a soft rag or brush.

Waterproof your casual shoes and outdoor leather boots with a quality shoe care product to screen your footwear from water, snow and salt stains. These products usually come on a spray. Apply good two to three coating to make sure that your shoes are covered properly. Reapply the proofing from time to time to guarantee protection from weather and water damage. Leather shrinks and gets hard if it gets wet, so waterproofing your shoes are essential. If they do get wet, let them dry naturally.

Condition your shoes to keep the leather soft and supple, to avoid cracks and to maintain a comfortable fit. Use quality leather conditioning oil or lotion. All-natural products are preferable as they allow the leather to breathe better, and harsh-chemicals can be harmful to the leather. Silicone-based products sit on top of the leather, making it look shiny. Leather conditioners are available at most large pharmacy chains in the shoe-care section.

Store your leather shoes on shoe trees to absorb excess moisture and retain the shape of the leather. Do not put leather shoes near direct heat, and place them somewhere dry to avoid mildew. Do not put them immediately away after you take them off. Switch on the ceiling fan and allow them to air out. Leather retains moisture from your feet, which will eventually cause it to dry and crack if you don't give them a chance to air out for a day or so. Shoes need at least 12-24 hours of rest between wearing to avoid disfigurement.

Repair minor shoes problems before they became lasting impairment. Broken heels and worn soles are not only unpleasant and can cause further damage to your shoes, but they are also uncomfortable to walk on and can be potentially unsafe for your feet. Common Mistakes Made by Users of Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word can be found on almost every computer in the known world, and not just PCs either. Macs run Word too. It's probably because it's so widely used that most people never get trained in how to use it and, as a consequence a lot of Word users make some pretty basic mistakes when creating their documents.

* Are you ever guilty of pressing the Return key at the top of a document to move the cursor down, perhaps when creating a document to be printed on your company stationery? If so, this means that you are creating a document with unwanted characters at the start. Much better to click on File - Page Setup and change the top margin (in Word 2003) or click on Custom Margins in the Page Layout tab of the Word 2007 ribbon.

* The habit of putting two spaces after a period goes back to the days of typewriters and monospace (fixed-width) typefaces like Courier where having two spaces after a period made the end of each sentence easier to detect when reading. Since modern computer-generated typefaces are proportionally spaced, the extra space is superfluous and should not be used.

* A lot of Word users also like to press the Return key twice after each paragraph. This tends to create too much space. It's better to use just one Return then adjust the paragraph spacing by choosing Format - Paragraph (in Word 2003 and earlier) or clicking on the Page Layout tab (in Word 2007) and entering the desired amount in the box marked Spacing After.

* People who have never had any formal Microsoft Word training can perhaps be forgiven for not fully understanding how tabs work. You will even see some users attempting to align elements by using the space bar and, of course, when they print the document, nothing is properly aligned. As experienced users will know, the Tab key should be used; not the space bar.

* Having identified the Tab key as the correct one to use to create columns, many Word users just press the tab key to tab along to the next default tab. The number of times the Tab key is pressed will thus vary, depending on the length of each piece of text. It is much better to set one's own tabs by clicking on the Word ruler. This means that on each line of text, the tab key will be pressed the same number of times between columns.

* Another common mistake among Word users is to manually format text in long documents or perhaps to user the Format Painter. Manually formatting text is fine for single page or short documents but with long documents, it's best to use Word's style feature. That way, if you need to modify the appearance of the document, all you need to do is to modify the attributes of the styles.

* Then there's the question of who's in charge: Word or the user. You will often hear users complain that Word has a mind of its own: "It tries to do everything for you". Remember, almost any setting in Word that irritates you can be modified by going to Tools - Options in Word 2003 or earlier or choosing Word Options from the Office Button in Word 2007. - 17913

When Rocky fought his opponent he had the focus of 'the eye of the tiger'. When that song was written they couldn't have had any idea the significance it would take on when a new Tiger took the world stage and changed sports forever.

I don't care if you are a golf fan or a sports fan or if you think there is too much hype over this one particular athlete-yes golfers are athletes.

Tiger Woods is a force to be reckoned with. I could write a book about not only his accomplishments in the sports world, but also his accomplishments as a human being, but many books have already been written. In fact I wrote about Tiger in my book, "Breakthrough to Success."

Look at what Tiger does in terms of how you live your life. Could you stand up to the level of excellence that Tiger requires of himself? If you raised your expectations, do you think you would be performing head and shoulders above your competition?

I've always been a huge fan of his because not only is he a consummate professional, he has such intense focus that you can see it on his face when you watch him on TV. I have also had the pleasure of standing just a few feet from him on more than one occasion and watching that focus in person.

Over and over again I heard the announcers at the tournament talking about how nobody would believe this if it was a movie. It would just be too much of a fantasy and the whoever wrote a screenplay that played out like this would be laughed out of a movie mogul's office. I don't know if I've ever seen a movie or a sporting event with this many interesting characters and twists and turns.

Tiger is larger than life and his life is richer, more nuanced, and more interesting than any movie script. And this weekend he was Rocky, but he wasn't fighting an opponent, he was doing what his dad had taught him. He was playing full out because that's the only way to do it.

There were so many amazing shots from this one tournament. You can probably find them all on Youtube. But it's not about the shots. It's about the measure of the man. During the tournament some of his fellow golfers, who should feel really ashamed of themselves right now, wondered out loud through their pettiness and jealousy how hurt Tiger really was.

Tiger on the other hand downplayed his injury to not take the focus off the Open while he played through incredible pain that would have made almost any other player call it quits, especially when he was so far back that it didn't look like he had any chance at all of winning.

And yet, Tiger not only didn't quit, he forced a playoff and played another 19 holes on Monday. And then he made the impossible inevitable by winning...again!

Watching him play in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines for 4 days instead of the usual 3 was a treat and at the same time painful. My heart ached every time I saw him wince when he hit the ball or when his caddy pulled him up by the arm when he couldn't get up by himself or when the pain of taking another stroke had him almost doubled over in pain.

And I wondered how he could keep going, where did he find the inner strength to focus enough to pull it out day after day?

Ironically during the tournament there was a commercial running with audio of his dad talking about how Tiger would never meet anyone else as mentally tough as him in his entire life.

He certainly proved his dad right that weekend. I'm sorry I won't be seeing him play the rest of the summer, but I know he'll be back next year better than ever because striving for excellence is just his natural way of being.

Learn How to Prune Your Favorite Garden Trees

To keep your garden trees looking good, most varieties will need to be pruned regularly.

Your trees will reward you 1000% next season with stronger growth and an abundance of flowers and fruit.

The lack of annual pruning causes flowering and fruit trees to produce small fruit and a poor show of flowers.

Pruned trees are stronger and their branches are less likely to break making the trees safer so there is less likelihood of a branch falling and causing damage.

Required tools are gloves, knife, saw and secateurs.

Just spend a few moments to look at the tree's size and shape and use your imagination as to how it would look when you have finished pruning it.

The trees branches form the main shape branching out from the trunk which forms the structure. You will need to leave this central structure and shape the tree around this.

Pruning is about taking out branches that are growing parallel with each other and any that cross over others or causing congestion, this will allow the remaining branches to develop and produce an abundance of fruit and flowers.

Always cut out branches that are growing inward, toward the center of the tree, these will only clutter up the shape of the tree.

Take a good look at the three and visualize the areas that look congested applying the guidelines mentioned earlier to thin the offending areas.

If the tree has become too tall you can cut it down to the level you require, it would be best to do this before you start shaping the tree, although this will probably mean taking out the leader in order to lower the tree structure.

If you have to cut any large branches it is advisable to paint the cut ends with a special paint that can be obtained from a garden store.

The best time to prune trees is during the winter when the trees are in their dormant stage and all the leaves and fruit have gone.

Any dead or dying braches should be cut off with a shape saw, you can cut this out at any time of the season as it is best out of the way, don't forget to paint the cut branch ends.

You will need a container large enough to be able to dip the cutting blades of your pruning tools into a solution of household bleach, as the sap from the cuts can carry disease and this will be passed onto you healthy trees if you dont take precautions.

There is usually a collar at the base of the branch, you will need to cut above this collar so as to leave enough wood to allow the cut to heal over with fresh tissue from this collar.

If you have trees that you rely on to provide shade during the summer, you can thin these out to maintain their shape, but be careful not to lower their height too much or you will reduce the shade you require.

Collecting all the old leaves and any fallen fruit during the winter, before you start pruning will help prevent the carry-over of disease from one season to the other, giving your trees and better start next year. - 17913

Research Shows Neuropathic Pain Decreased with Medical Marijuana

Studies have suggested that medical marijuana can reduce the pain of a condition called chronic pain syndrome in which is when a burning sensation occurs and touch can feel like an injury.

This condition is unaffected by drugs in the aspirin family and fairly resistant to stronger analgesics such as opiates.

In 2007 a study pertaining to neuropathic pain was done on patients with HIV related infections where they had fifty patients smoke medical marijuana cigarettes three times a day or medical marijuana cigarettes from which the active ingredients had been extracted.

They were then instructed to rate their pain on a scale from "no pain" to "worst pain imaginable."

The results showed a 34% reduction in ratings of pain in the medical marijuana group compared with 17% in the placebo group over five days of treatment as was published in the journal Neurology.

Additional research concluded that 44 patients found that medical marijuana alleviated neuropathic pain arising from a variety of conditions, including spinal cord injury and diabetes and was published in June in the Journal of Pain.

The case study was conducted in the following manner -- the medical marijuana group was first instructed two puffs, then three puffs an hour later, then four puffs an hour after that -- from a single cigarette containing either 0%, 3.5%, or 7% THC.

Prior to smoking medical marijuana the average rating of pain was around 55 on a 100-point scale and decreased by 46% in both treatment groups and by 27% in the placebo group one hour after the last smoke.

It is quite normal for analgesic drugs are often tested against experimentally induced pain. Such studies have been conducted for medical marijuana too.

One such example is when 15 healthy volunteers received skin injections with capsaicin which was done in 2007 and published in the journal Anesthesiology.

capsaicin is the chemical behind that fiery spice in chile peppers and then smoked different strength medical marijuana cigarettes.

The medium dose, with a 4% THC concentration, lessened the burning pain.

The research concluded that smoking marijuana can bring relief to sufferers of neuropathic pain comparable to other analgesic drugs.

Well, at least we do recognise how to look after circulatory system and keep our heart good . It would seem to me though, with such an fundamental matter as my heart which is my lifeline, I personally want to acknowledge everything I can about how it works, so I can give the greatest care possible. Elliptical vs Treadmills: Which One Burns More Calories?

As I'm sure you have noticed, home gym equipment isn't cheap. When you are looking to invest in something to help you lose weight it is important to know which piece of equipment is most effective at burning off calories.

You'll hear arguments on both sides of the treadmill versus elliptical debate. Out of all exercise equipment, these two sell the most. Of course, you'll have to make a personal decision as to which piece of machinery you like best. But if it all boils down to which one burns more calories, then there's a definitive answer for you.

The simple fact is that both machines can help burn the exact same number of calories, it just all depends on how you exercise with them, but working out on an elliptical can be just as effective as working out on a treadmill.

Many people find that running on a treadmill is too intense for their joints - it is true that a workout on a treadmill can have a very deep impact on your body. If you find that you cannot run on a treadmill, then a workout on an elliptical can be just as effective at burning calories, and will have a lesser impact on your joints and muscles.

If you chose to run on a treadmill at around 7 mph for an hour, your body would use about 783 calories. Use an elliptical trainer, and you should expect to use up about 774 calories - so the numbers are more or less identical. However, if you only walked on the treadmill at 3 mph, your body would burn just 297 calories, which is a massive difference!

It's important to remember though that this is not a straight forward formula, the number of calories you can burn using an elliptical trainer vary greatly depending on how you approach your exercise routine. Some people go for a full force approach, which others decide to take a more moderate workout.

When considering which exercise machine to purchase, you simply have to decide which will give you the most pleasure. You will spend quite a lot of time working out so it is important to pick the machine which you will enjoy the most.

If for example you love to walk, jog or run, then a treadmill would be an obvious choice for you. Treadmills let you get all the benefits of walking, without having to leave your home, which means you can get your exercise even if the weather is bad outside. However, if you really want to lose weight and burn those calories then you will have to be sure to use your treadmill at a suitable speed and set the incline to give yourself a more intense workout.

For those that have problems with the knees and ankles, or have experienced joint pain then an elliptical would be perfect for you. Not only does it allow you to burn calories, but ellipticals also have a less harsh impact on your body. They are also ideal for older people because they are much more forgiving to the joints and muscles. Branding Yourself for the Job Interview?

If you have been listening to news reports or reading articles about the job market, you are aware that you are in a tough job market and that you will have to do something to make yourself stand out from the rest of the crowd.

You know that you are competing against the odds. You need to ask yourself, "How can I make myself stand out when there are so many other candidates looking at the same job?"

The answer is to "BRAND YOURSELF."

What this means is you have to discover WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE.

Let's assume that because you have an outstanding resume and that you made it to the top of the stack of resumes of people to be called for an interview. You, and maybe nine or ten other equally qualified people for the position, that is.

Because companies have so many candidates to choose from they are interviewing more people so that they can select the "best." When you are lucky enough to be invited to an interview it is essential that you be ready to sell yourself - to let the interviewer know what makes you unique " what makes you a "remembered" person -- what added value you can bring to the position"in other words, why you are the best person for the job? Your goal is to leave behind an impression of your "brand."

By doing some basic preparation, you can determine your uniqueness and where you should focus your attention. The first step in this process is to identify your five areas of strength. These strengths are the areas where you do very well. This will take some work and some thought on your part.

"What is your area of expertise?"

"What are your strengths?"

"What is your work ethic?"

"What would your co-workers or former bosses say about you?"

Think about your previous performance appraisals " what was said/written about you?

To help you through this process here is Branding Exercise that will help you get started.

Use whatever application works best for you to do this exercise " paper/pencil, spreadsheet, word document " the point is to get it down in writing. ("Winging" it does not work when interviewing in this environment)

First, write your education, training, certifications and years of experience.

List degrees, special training, certifications, overall years of experience, years in a particular type of position or specialty .

Next, what is your area of expertise? What do you know a great deal about?

"My expertise is in in my capacity I handle all I have worked on $..projects, deals.I am fluent in ..broad range of experiences in .including analyzing evaluating .I am knowledgeable about . I use this knowledge to I also have a strong sense .."

Third, what are your strengths?

These skills can be viewed as transferable" you can take them with you to any job you hold.

This is how you excel in being the type of person or employee who has what it takes to get the job done. These skills are sometimes referred to as the "soft skills" " but there is nothing soft about these skills when it comes to putting your "brand" together. You want a good clear image of yourself - the whole picture.

Examples of these skills are your communication and people skills, or your time-management and project-management skills, or your ability to build strong relationships or your ability to influence others.

Fourth, what does your past say about you?

This is a good place to think about your work ethic, loyalty, integrity, and overall disposition in the office. Do you get along well with most coworkers? Think about previous performance appraisals " what was said or written about you? What would your co-workers or ex-bosses say about you?

Lastly, think of the personal traits that make you unique.

Maybe you never miss deadlines, or perhaps you are willing to do above and beyond what is asked, or perhaps you have a great attitude. Sometimes letting the interviewer know that you have a great sense of humor that helps lighten the environment " especially during tense situations is appropriate. All these things make you the person that you are " a unique "brand" of a person. (Don't dismiss these traits--many people have been fired for negative personal traits rather than for lack of knowledge).

This is where you "brand" yourself into a product that is better than the others; someone who leaves an impression behind. When you have identified your five unique areas, try your hand at writing yourself a "commercial" or statement about yourself, incorporating this information into your statement.

What is the impression you want to leave behind? The guy who wore the funny looking tie? Or the woman who is known for her organizational skill and her ability to come in and bring order to chaos?

By focusing on five areas of strength, you will become more focused and feel more confident and in turn become more "remembered." In summary, by narrowing your uniqueness " by branding yourself into these five basic points you can guide the conversation to include this information. - 17913
